Preventing Flooding in Your Home – Home Matters Series

Top tips to help to reducing the risk of flooding in your home

Did You Know?

As the climate changes, heavy rain is more likely. In the UK, the average annual rainfall is 7% higher than 30 years ago, according to the Met Office. Sudden deluges can overwhelm drainage systems and cause surface water flooding, making preventive measures are essential to protect your home. Consider the following precautions to prevent flooding in your home.

Preventing Flooding in Your Home

Workers who perform hazardous work are also especially at risk when working alone. If a workplace accident occurs, no one may be around to give the worker assistance—and if the incident is severe, they may be unable to call for help.

  • Clear gutters and drains. Clean the gutters and drainpipes attached to your roof at least twice a year. Consider fitting gutter guards to stop debris (e.g. leaves) from entering.
  • Use water butts. It can be troublesome to configure guttering to direct water run-off away from your home. Installing a water butt can help you safely manage the flow of water while collecting water to use in your garden.
  • Choose hard landscaping carefully. When planning patios, decks and driveways, consider surfaces that allow water to permeate.
  • Plant leafy vegetation. Trees and plants absorb groundwater through their roots and leaves. Look for ways to plant more vegetation in your garden.
  • Inspect your roof. Have your roof carefully inspected at least once a year by a competent, qualified professional. Conduct maintenance and make repairs as needed.
  • Remain vigilant. Conduct regular upkeep on your home and be on the lookout for warning signs of an impending flood problem.

Be Prepared

If flooding occurs, it’s imperative to be familiar with how to turn off electricity, gas and water at main switches and valves within your home. Knowing how to do this ahead of time will help you react quickly and minimise potential flood damage.

In addition, secure adequate insurance cover to ensure financial protection if a flood damages your home. Although buildings insurance policies typically include flood insurance, there may be exclusions. For instance, certain parts of your property (e.g. outbuildings and fences) may not be included, and most policies don’t cover groundwater flooding.
